Thanks, Will, for the pointers. I’ve always been of a mixed mind about this stuff. Having been a webmaster (as well as helping my wife the blog writer) and wanting to know something about my users, I can understand the desire of the site owners. But I’ve been an EFF member in the past as well because I do think we as consumers are under attack in many ways. I do take steps to protect my kids’ browsing in particular, and don’t do all that much interesting to any data miner online myself (even FB is more of the “ribbing my sister about how boring soccer is” variety than anything useful for marketing). I appreciate your sharing good tools for us to have a fighting chance in the battle.
JCB, you know the best protection is careful vigilance. My son, as you might expect, has a healthy approach to ‘net security. He understands, for instance, how “sticky” the ‘net is.
The good news is that many of his friends who don’t have tech savvy parents show the same caution.
I just had a good conversation with a 12 year-old who not only had a good grasp of many ‘net dangers but was familiar with techniques to protect himself – including avoiding some of the social site pitfalls made by an older generation. Quite encouraging.
That said, it’s nice to have some assistance in maintaining some shreds of privacy. I use all the tools I posted except TOR. It’s a great service but I haven’t had call to use it as of yet.
