Subject: [lac] email submitted on behalf of Jack Evans Ken and Fellow committee members, In response to the request at the July LAC meeting that the University demonstrate the type of outcome desired from the LAC process, we have put together two documents for consideration and feedback by the LAC representatives. We hope these documents will be helpful to the process and we are distributing them ahead of the August 24th meeting to provide you adequate time to consider their content. The two attached documents are a coded reference matrix, showing the areas of agreement and disagreement identified by the University, and the beginning draft of a synthesized set of Guiding Principles for the Carolina North Campus. We hope that further discussion will bring about additional areas of agreement. a.. The Draft Guiding Principles reflects the elements of agreement that we see at this point of the work of the LAC, in principle-level language. It is our sincere hope that the LAC committee will consider this as a living document that is fully open to additions, edits, discussion and changes. It is the 'straw man' document that was requested and is fully open to discussion. The document contains a preamble that describes the vision for the Carolina North Campus. a.. The matrix of principles has proven to be a useful reference document because it summarizes concisely the inputs that have been provided by all participants. In the attached version of that document, we have retained the exact wording but have indicated the University evaluation as follows. 1.. Elements that reflect agreement appear in plain text (fortunately, this is a substantial portion of the matrix). 2.. Elements that we think do not yet reflect agreement but might become areas of agreement as a result of further discussion or clarification are underlined. 3.. Elements that represent current disagreement appear in bold. We encourage further discussion about these elements to examine the importance of or need for these elements and perhaps develop agreement. 4.. Elements that appear to be specifications rather than principles are in italics. It is our hope that the LAC will continue to discuss and refine the topics on which there is not yet agreement so that they can migrate from the reference document (matrix) into the final guiding principles to be endorsed by the LAC. We appreciate the Town of Chapel Hill's efforts to begin that discussion at the last session by sharing their areas of concern. We expect to continue that discussion as the committee develops guiding principles for the planning of the Carolina North campus. While we realize that there may be topics on which the committee cannot arrive at full consensus, we hope that the group will attempt to identify and add many areas of common agreement to the principles document to help guide the University's planning process for the Carolina North campus. The group may also choose to document the areas of disagreement. We look forward to presenting this material and continuing to discuss these principles with you on the 24th.
