Council Colleagues,

Thank you all for your hard work this week.  Below are a few updates.

Council Retreat

The Retreat Committee has been working closely with facilitator, Maggie Chotas.  Agendas and materials will be out to you this week.  The schedule is as follows:

  • Fri, February 5: 4pm-7pm
  • Sat, February 6: 9am-12pm
  • Mon, February 8: 6pm-8pm

Please note the following schedule changes:

  • The January 20th Closed Session is being rescheduled to Wednesday, February 10th.
  • The CCES meeting has been rescheduled to Friday, February 12th at 8 a.m.

Weekly Updates:

CHCCS Check-In

On Wednesday, I had the opportunity to check-in with CHCCS School Board'S new leadership, Chair Jillian La Serna and Vice Chair Deon Teme.   I took the opportunity to update them on several issues our organizations have been working on such as shared space for using school facilities to increase summer camps and, also, our interest in increased partnership on COVID support groups such as  YMCA Scholastic Support Centers and Neighborhood Support Circles.

Greene Tract MMC Meeting

The MMC met at the end of the day on Thursday to discuss the Greene Tract.

On the agenda were:

  • Rogers Road Sewer Construction Update
  • Rogers Road Zoning Update
  • Greene Tract Environmental Assessment
  • Community Outreach
  • MOU Review

I will pass along additional information separately and forward meeting minutes when they are made available.

Metro Mayors Legislative Call

Duke Energy IRP Feedback

Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines and I spoke with the (virtually) assembled mayors to share the letter our towns have signed and to encourage others to give feedback to Duke Energy as well.

Metro Mayors Transportation Letter

I will be adding my signature to a joint letter requesting that Governor Cooper restore Transit SMAP funding to the state’s annual budget.  The letter will also go to the Chairs of the Transportation Appropriations committees.

COVID Assistance

A separate COVID funding bill is likely to emerge from the NCGA in the coming weeks regarding most recent federal funding.  All activity at the state level is going to be contingent upon the action at the federal level.

Education is one of the biggest issues related to COVID with two area of focus:

  1. Assessing learning loss
  2. Figuring out how to get students back into the classroom

NCGA Organization

A few items of note:

Three interesting notes:

On the House side, there are quite a few Democrats that have been appointed as Vice Chairs indicating that there will be a more bi-partisan approach at the committee level.

There is a new House Transportation Chair, Rep. Brenden Jones (R-Columbus, Robeson).  He has a great understanding how maintaining good roads helps economic development across the state.

House Local Government Committee – New this year, the committee has been broken up into two different elements.  One committee will focus specifically on Land Use, Planning, and Development.  This committee is chaired by Rep. Mark Brody (R-Union).

Looking Ahead:

Aura Traffic Information Session

February 10th, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.

People’s Academy applications are being accepted through February 19th.  Information and applications are posted in English, Spanish and Chinese.  Please help share this with the public.

Hope you all have a nice weekend.

Pam
